third sunday of advent--the candle of joy
SERMON: A Businessman With A Heart
SCRIPTURE: Luke 2:1-7
INTERACTIVE PLAY FROM PEDIDA DE LA POSADA—ASKING FOR LODGING
Joseph: In the name of heaven, I beg you for lodging for my beloved wife cannot walk.
Innkeeper: This is not an inn here; so keep going. I cannot open my door; you might be lazy vagrants
Joseph: Don’t be inhuman; have pity on us. God in Heaven will reward you for it.
Innkeeper: You had better go and don’t disturb us. Because if I get angry, I’ll beat you up
Joseph: We are worn out, coming from Nazareth; I am a carpenter. My name is Joseph.
Innkeeper: I don’t care what your name is; let me go back to sleep. I already told you, we’re not opening the door
Joseph: I ask you for lodging dear Innkeeper, only for one night, for the Queen of Heaven
Innkeeper: Well, if it’s for a queen you are asking, why does she travel at night, so alone?
Joseph: My wife is Mary; she’s the Queen of Heaven and she’s going to be mother of the Divine Word
Innkeeper: Are you Joseph? Your wife is Mary? Enter pilgrims. I didn’t know who you were
Joseph: May God repay your kindness, sir, and the heavens heap happiness upon you
Innkeeper: Lodging I give you with much joy. Enter righteous Joseph. Enter with Mary
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—From the Introduction to A Family Christmas
Selected and introduced by Caroline Kennedy
Hope can bring disappointment; Love can be painful. Families fracture and recombine. And the powerful emotions of the holidays are not always easy to manage. Yet the liturgy and literature teaches us that Christmas encompasses the miraculous and the tragic, the profound and the ridiculous, and always represents the connection to something larger than ourselves. If we are open to the gifts of understanding, hope, and faith in others and in God, the spirit of Christmas can help make real the way we want to live our lives.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
