SERMON: Q and R--Quirinius and Responsibility
SCRIPTURE: Deuteronomy 30:15-20
CHILDREN'S SERMON: Help is Available
REPONSIVE READING
Leader: You shall therefore love the Lord your God and always keep his charge. His statute which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it out of reach. It is not in heaven, that you should say:
Men: Who will go up to heaven for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?
Leader: Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say:
Women: Who will cross the sea for us to get it for us and make us hear it, that we may observe it?
Everyone: But the Word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may observe it.
Leader: This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.
Everyone: For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.
Leader: Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?
Everyone: Behold to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.
Leader: He who has My commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves Me;
Everyone: And he who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I will love him, and will disclose Myself to him.
Leader: Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My Word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him."
Everyone: And by this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
