SERMON: Tarnishing the Golden Rule
SCRIPTURE: Matthew 18:21-35
RESPONSIVE READING—Isiah 2:2-4
Leader: In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as highest of the mountains
Everyone: and shall be raised above the hills, all the nations shall stream to it
Leader: Many peoples shall come and say, “come let us go up to the mountain of the Lord to the house of the Lord of Jacob;
Everyone: that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths.”
Leader: For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem
Everyone: He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
Leader: they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks;
Everyone: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—CONFESSION OF 1967
We believe that God supports the downtrodden, protects the stranger, helps orphans and widows and blocks the path of the ungodly; that for God pure and undefiled religion is to visit the orphans and the widows in their suffering; that God wishes to teach the church to do what is good and to seek the right; that the church must therefore stand by people in any form of suffering and need, which implies, among other things, that the church must witness against and strive against any form of injustice, so that justice may roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
