SERMON: What Would Howard Have Said?
SCRIPTURE: I Samuel 17:41-54
RESPONSIVE READING—PSALM 1
Leader: Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
Everyone: But their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
Leader: They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
Everyone: The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Leader: Therefore, the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Everyone: For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—CONFESSION BELHAR
We believe that God supports the downtrodden, protects the stranger, helps orphans and widows and blocks the path of the ungodly; that for God pure and undefiled religion is to visit the orphans and the widows in their suffering; that God wishes to teach the church to do what is good and to seek the right; that the church must therefore stand by people in any form of suffering and need, which implies, among other things, that the church must witness against and strive against any form of injustice, so that justice may roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy name
Thy Kingdom Come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
